Attic Ventilation

austin roof inspections

Attic ventilation is one of the most important factors in roof longevity and, if ignored, moist hot air can become trapped inside the attic causing mold and mildew to form. Additionally, because asphalt roofs absorb 100% of the sunlight, the heat trapped inside the attic can reach 140 degrees causing wood framing to break down and eventually splinter or split into pieces. The extreme high temperature literally cooks the roof from the inside out leaving blisters on the ridge and drastically reducing the lifetime of the roof.

When configured correctly, attic ventilation efficiently manages both the air intake and air exhaust. Hot air naturally rises upward and is supplemented by the intake air flow from the soffits, which is at the lowest point of the attic, further pushing the air flow upward. If needed, we install a ridge vent across the top of the roof allowing continuous air flow exhaust and ventilation.

The preferred solution is installing a ridge vent for the entire distance of the roof for efficient passive air flow. However, some ridges are not long enough for proper ventilation to take place, such as a hip roof where all points converge to a high point and short ridge. In these cases, we recommend installing an electric or solar powered attic vent to force air flow out of the attic.

Taylor Roof Inspections & Insurance Claim FAQs

Do I need to call my insurance company before getting a roof inspection?

First, we recommend getting a free roof inspection. If there is no damage, then there is no claim to file and you protect your policy history.

What happens during Taylor roof inspections?

A highly-trained roof inspector will thoroughly inspect the roof for hail, wind or storm damage. The customer receives a Roof Inspection Report documenting every aspect of the roof with photos and a detailed report including whether or not to file an insurance claim.

How soon should I file an insurance claim after experiencing roof damage from a hailstorm?

As soon as possible. Most insurance companies require claims to be filed within a specific timeframe, such as 6 to 12 months. The sooner an insurance claim is filed, the stronger it is considered. We recommend scheduling a free roof inspection immediately after a major hailstorm to preserve claim eligibility.

Can you help if I already filed an insurance claim?

Yes, we can get involved at any point during the insurance claim process. If you have already filed a claim, we will work with your insurance adjuster to make sure nothing is missed and the claim processed to the fullest extent.

Do I need to be home for the insurance adjuster appointment?

Not necessarily. If we have already inspected your roof, then we prefer to meet with your insurance adjuster, get on the roof with them and point out the specific damage. If you are unavailable, we can help move the insurance process forward on your behalf.

What if my insurance does not cover the full cost of repairs?

In most cases, you should only pay the deductible amount on the policy. It is common for the initial estimate to miss some of the damage to the roof. This is where we can really help by meeting with the insurance adjuster, getting on the roof together and pointing out specific damage that might have been missed. We follow up with documented reports including photographs, as needed, to ensure your coverage reflects the full scope of work required.

How long is the insurance claim process?

Typically, insurance claims are approved in 1-2 weeks after filing. Once approved, we will schedule and complete the installation in less than a week.

Can I determine if there is hail damage by viewing the roof from the ground?

Most hail damage is not visible from the ground. Dents, bruising, granule loss and lifted shingles are rarely visible from the street level, however, very capable of causing water leaks now or in the future. Our free roof inspection includes close-up photo documentation so you can see the visible damage and avoid further damage and costly repairs.

How old can my roof be before the insurance company denies coverage?

Most insurance companies have limits on how old a roof can be before they reduce or deny coverage. While policies vary, many insurers begin to restrict coverage when a roof is 15 - 20 years and made of asphalt shingles.

Why choose a local roofing company such as Sixth Gen Roofing?
